Second grade is full of learning and discovery during the school day. We build on the strong foundations students developed in first grade and believe in helping every child succeed. We strive to teach our students to become independent thinkers and learners.
In reading, students read a wide variety of genres, such as realistic fiction, fairy tales, non-fiction/informational text, biographies, poetry, and more. Students participate in reading groups where they learn the skills to be successful readers. As second grade students become more fluent readers, our focus shifts from decoding strategies to comprehension. Reading responses, book discussions, and partner activities help students grow as readers.
Everyday Math is the curriculum that guides our math instruction. Students are challenged to expand their mathematical knowledge through direct instruction, small group work, and games. We cover seven mathematical strands: operations and computation, number sense, data and probability, measurement (time, distance, and money) geometry, patterns and functions, and algebra.
Writing occurs across the curriculum. Whether it is writing out a science experiment, explaining how to solve a math problem or writing a friendly letter, second graders are constantly working on improving their communication skills. During daily writing time, students write a variety of pieces that include personal narratives, research reports persuasive essays both with and without evidence and possibly some poetry. These products are published using a variety of digital tools.
Our main area of study in social studies is the community around us. The year starts with a focus on our classroom and school. Study then expands to look at the larger community of Broomfield as a whole. Students learn the history of the community, what geographical features are present in the community, how the community functions, who works in the community, and how consumers and producers are important to our economy. At the end of March, students participate in the Second Grade Marketplace where they must create and sell their own goods to Meridian Elementary consumers.
Second grade science focuses on three main areas of study. These include Plants, Animals and Environments, Forces and Motion, and finally Weather and Seasons. Students explore science through hands-on activities, experiments, inquiry, and technology. Learning done by students is recorded using Science Notebooks. . At the end of the year, students are required to participate in the Second Grade Science Fair to showcase their learning.
Second grade is a year of wonder and exploration. We hope you enjoy the journey!
